The 4th ISPAD Course and Conference "CHANGING DIABETES" Brought Together Experts from 14 Countries in Varna

More than 120 physicians, nurses and students took part in the 4th ISPAD Postgraduate Course and Conference “CHANGING DIABETES” www.ispad.org. Representatives of 14 countries (Bulgaria, Israel, Italy, Romania, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Belarus, etc.) had the opportunity to listen to lectures, participate in discussions and meet contemporary leaders in childhood diabetes, including Prof. Francesco Chiarelli from Chieti, Italy - Secretary of the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) and Prof. Orit Pinhas-Hamiel from Israel, leader in insulin pump therapy.

During the high-level scientific forum, state-of-the-art science and practice in the field of diabetes arising from genetic mutations beyond the neonatal period were presented, as well as information on direct access to free diagnostics. It was also noted that Bulgaria is at the forefront of well-diagnosed cases, ahead of many European countries and even the United States. For the first time a young scientist session was organized, in which Bulgarian and Italian doctors presented interesting cases from their practice. The poster session, in which only Bulgarian posters took part, gave rise to a strong interest.

The second main focus of the course was the rare diseases, in which Varna occupies a leading role in our country. Prof. Faisal Ahmed from Glasgow, Chair of the ESPE Scientific Committee, acquainted the participants with the registry for disorders in sex differentiation as well as with the direction of future care development. The course participants worked together with Prof. Annemieke Boot, current director of ESPE E-Learning Portal, on the diagnosis of rare bone diseases - Osteogenezis Imperfecta, genetic and acquired forms of osteoporosis, etc. Prof. Anita Hocken-Kollega, director of the Dutch Growth Foundation, presented the current behaviour in Prader-Willi syndrome, sharing the difficulties on the way to achieving it.

Traditionally, the course was held with the support of Medical University-Varna and University Hospital "St. Marina". For the first time in the forum a lecture was organized for non-medical persons and parents interested in contemporary knowledge on diabetes, after which Prof. Chiarelli, Prof. Hamiel, Dr. von Zengbusch and Prof. Yotova answered the questions of those present.
