MU-Varna - Host of the 8th Edition of a Practical Course within the Series OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGIA PRACTICA

MU-Varna hosted the eighth edition of a practical course within the series OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGIA PRACTICA on 14th February 2020. The course started back in 2005, and today it has gained wide popularity among the specialists. The focus of the event, which had gathered plenty of medical professionals in the field of ear, nose and throat diseases in Varna, was the topic "Antimicrobial Therapy in Otorhinolaryngology - Modern Standards".

The symposium was opened by Assoc. Prof. Nikolay Sapundzhiev, Head of TS ENT Diseases at the Department of Neurosurgery and ENT Diseases at MU-Varna. The first practice-oriented lecture was delivered by Assoc. Prof. Tsvetan Velinov, Head of the Laboratory of Microbiology at Aleksandrovska University Hospital / Medical Faculty-Burgas. The topic was "Antibiotic Therapy for the Most Common ENT Organ Inflammatory Diseases". Dr. Galen Shivarov, Head of ENT Department at MHAT "St. Anna"-Varna, acquainted the course participants with "Rational Therapeutic Behaviour in Tonsillitis and Tonsillopharyngitis", and Assoc. Prof. Nikolay Sapundzhiev presented the topic "Therapeutic Approaches in the Treatment of Acute Rhinosinusitis".

Specialists have grounds for concern since antibiotic resistance has become a growing public health issue. The misuse of antibiotics has become an extremely worrying trend worldwide. Given the current rate of development, antibiotic resistance could result in 10 million deaths and huge financial losses globally by 2050.


The forum became the venue of an exciting meeting of the doyen of the Bulgarian Otorhinolaryngology - Prof. Ivan Tsenev with his students and colleagues. He presented to the audience "Surgical Treatment of Inflammatory Middle Ear Diseases". Prof. Tsenev is a pioneer in the field, winner of numerous awards of BMA, MU-Sofia, and he was the first surgeon in our country to perform cochlear implant surgery in 1999. His professional and academic path has been closely intertwined with MU-Varna.

In this regard and in connection with his 85th anniversary, pursuant to the Regulations of Medical University - Varna, the academic management of MU-Varna awarded Prof. Dr. Ivan Tsenev, DSc, with a plaque "SIGNUM LAUDIS" for his contribution to the research and academic development of lecturers at MU-Varna and other universities in the Republic of Bulgaria. On behalf of the academic community at MU-Varna, the award was officially presented by Prof. Dr. Yavor Enchev - Head of the Department of Neurosurgery and ENT Diseases at MU-Varna.

The excitement and delight of the jubilee at the meeting with his students and colleagues were sincere, and he addressed the audience with the words: Read, you have to read every day, don't you ever let a single day pass without you having done something!



Background Information: Prof. Ivan Tsenev started his professional path in 1964 as an Assistant Professor in Pathoanatomy at Higher Medical Institute - Varna and acquired a specialty in 1967. Later Prof. Tsenev was the Head of the Department of ENT Diseases at MU-Varna for three years (1997-2000). During this period he reorganised the training process and its content, introduced new surgical techniques, supervised and supported the doctoral studies of assistant professors, launched new specialisations and doctoral studies. He is the author of two monographs: "Clinico-Morphological Otology" and "Clinico-Morphological Rhinolaryngology". He has authored manuals for ear surgery "Practical Manual in Otorhinolaryngology". He is an author and co-author of numerous publications in Bulgarian and foreign journals.
