The 11th Multi-Discipline Regatta for the Cup of the Commandant of Nikola Yonkov Vaptsarov Naval Academy and the Mayor of Varna was held in the period of 12-14 May 2017.
Following the personal invitation of the organizers, for the first time the sailing team of MU-Varna, including Bulgarian and foreign students, lecturers and employees, has taken part in the competition. The team won the first place in the Sailing discipline, in Yal-6 Class, after winning two first and one second place in the races.
The Regatta is the first round of the state marine multi-discipline championship and was held within the aquatory of Varna Lake and Asparuhovo Beach. The event organizers are University Sports Club at N.Y. Vaptsarov Naval Academy, Sports Directorate of Varna Municipality, with the assistance of SC "Cherno more – Briz". The Regatta is under the patronage of the Commandant of N.Y. Vaptsarov Naval Academy - fleet admiral Prof. Boyan Mednikarov and the Mayor of Varna Mr. Ivan Portnih.
The Deputy Commandant of N.Y. Vaptsarov Naval Academy - captain 1st rank Svetoslav Dimitranov congratulated the crews participating in the multi-discipline marine competition and announced the start of the competitions in the disciplines of rowing, sailing, rope towing, throwing a heaving line and boating knots. 11 crews with a total of 121 competitors were registered for the 11th competition.
Later, on 13 May, during the regular training of the sailing team of MU -Varna, the students carried out their first rescue action.
After spotting a boat in distress on the central beach in Varna, the team coach Yavor Kolev alerted the crew of sailing boat "Hygieia" and organized a rescue operation. With the help of a rope, they towed the keel yacht stranded in the shallows, leading the vessel to safe waters. After overcoming the obstacles the emergency situation was brought under control and ended successfully.
For several years now MU - Varna has built the academic traditions of the sailing sport, and with every passing race it has achieved new victories. In the coming weeks the team is getting ready to take part in Varna Channel Cup Regatta 2017, and once again it is inspired to win the first places.
