The Traditions of Babinden (Midwife’s Day) Came to Life at MU-Varna for the Day of Maternity Care

Female students from Midwife specialty at MU-Varna congratulated the Management of the University, their lecturers and the teams of the Specialized Hospitals of Gynecology and Obstetrics and departments in the Sea capital on the occasion of 21st January - the Day of Maternity Care. Future midwives, dressed in national costumes, enacted the tradition of the holiday Babinden (Midwife’s Day), celebrated for centuries on end on the Bulgarian lands. In the past, on that day people used to pay homage to the elderly women who helped young mothers at childbirth and served as midwives. Today, by an ancient Bulgarian custom, the students decorated everybody with a bunch of geranium and exclaimed: "Let kids frolic around and become white and red! As many leaves on the trees, so many boys in the homes, as many snowdrops on the meadows so many little girls to be born."

“Happy holiday to everybody - to those who have a professional or just personal reason and to those who are going to have a reason to celebrate it in the near future! I wish to all of us to be healthy and full of life - all of us, our families, our children, our grandchildren. I want to tell our students that we are really proud of you. I’m thankful that you exactly are our students not only for your capability of working hard every day, but also because you are able to respect the Bulgarian traditions and holidays and your lecturers, the way you did today," said Assoc. Prof. Mutafova - Dean of the Faculty of Public Health.
