Sleep apnea (apnea – a Latin word, meaning "without breath", "cessation of breathing") and snoring are common conditions characterized with episodes of cessation of breathing during sleep. A significant part of the working age population suffers from this disease, and the lack of treatment could lead to disability. It has been proved that obstructive sleep apnea is an independent risk factor for the development of brain stroke (2.2%) and leads to increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (around 5%). Thus, indirectly OSA  deteriorates the quality of life.

The main symptoms of sleep apnea are:

  • breathing pauses for more than 10 seconds during sleep.
  • loud snoring followed by cessation of breathing
  • increased mobility during sleep
  • daytime sleepiness, difficulty in concentrating, lack of energy
  • spontaneous falling asleep during the day (particularly while driving), and others.

Polysomnography (PSG) is deemed the gold standard for examining sleep. It involves continuous monitoring, recording and interpretation of various physiological parameters of breathing, heart and brain during sleep.

Treatment of sleep apnea may vary considerably - from applying conservative measures such as weight loss or change of the position during sleep to surgery.
