Together in the struggle against diabetes

The number of men who suffer from diabetic and pre-diabetic conditions has increased and it is above that affecting women. In comparison to the results received for the previous years a visible increase is observed in the number of pre-diabetic conditions in Varna. These were the results from last year's campaign "Diabetes" which was conducted by the students from Varna Medical University. The fact is very alarming that the number of people under 55 years of age who suffer from this disease has increased in both sexes.

The world day dedicated to the struggle with diabetes will be marked this autumn and the medical students will carry out the annual campaign "Diabetes". Everybody who wants to measure their blood glucose can do it on 14th of November from 9:00 to 12:00 in one of the five venues - the University Hospital "St. Marina" - Varna, the Specialized Hospital in Obstetrics and Gynecology "Prof. Dr. Dimitar Stamatov" – Varna, the Medical University of Varna, the Faculty of Dental Medicine and the University of Economics.  This is the sixth successive campaign which is organized by the Students' Union at Varna Medical University, the Association of the Medical Students in Varna, the Association of Dental Medical Students – Varna, the Association of the Pharmaceutical Students in Varna and the Clinics of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at the University Hospital "St. Marina" – Varna.

Prof. Dr. Kiril Hristozov from the Department of Internal Diseases will wrap up the event and around 150 student volunteers will be awarded certificates for participation.

Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a socially significant epidemiological disease which is widespread in Bulgaria.  In order to be effective the fight against diabetes requires a specific state policy including information campaigns, regular prophylactic examinations and strict control over the disease. Students remind that prophylaxis is the best treatment for all illnesses, especially for those which progresses slowly, without acute symptoms as diabetes type 2.
