A delegation from Varna Medical University participated in the IVth South-East European Conference in Chemotherapy, Infections and Cancer which was held from 14th to 17th November, 2013, in Istanbul. Prof. Dr. Krasimir Metodiev from the Department of Preclinical and Clinical Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Nikola Kolev and Dr. Anton Tonev from the Department of General and Operative surgery, Assoc. Prof. Georgi Kuchukov from the Department of Neurosurgery and ENT Diseases and Dr. Asya Konsulova from the Department of Propaedeutic in Internal Diseases delivered 7 plenary lectures. Prof. Metodiev, Assoc. Prof. Kolev and Assoc. Prof. Kuchukov were chairmen of the symposium in the conference's programme.
The scientific forum was represented by renowned specialists from over 16 countries among which Italy, Germany, Great Britain, Serbia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Turkey, and Bulgaria. The event was organized by the host the Turkey Society of Chemotherapy (ANKEM) with the exclusive support of the World Society of Chemotherapy (ISC), the European Federation in Chemotherapy, Infections and Cancer (FESCI), the Mediterranean Society in Chemotherapy as well as with the participation of the national societies in chemotherapy, infections and cancer.
The delegation from Varna Medical University participated in the final meetings of the executive board of ISC and FESCI, during which a plan was discussed for the next conferences in 2014 in the city of Bled, Slovenia and in Thessaloniki in 2015, Greece. At the suggestion of Prof. Krasimir Metodiev, General Secretary of FESCI, the executive board at ISC and FESCI took a decision that Assoc. Prof. Nikola Kolev to be included in the working group of ISC in surgical infections and Assoc. Prof. George Kuchukov and Dr. Asya Konsulova to become member of the working group in oncology. In this way the representatives from Varna Medical University will be a part of the management for the next conferences. The respective working groups of ISC will be included in the discussions which will determine chemotherapy strategy and the application of the latest methods for diagnostics and treatment of the infections and cancer.
