MU-Varna Awarded the Honorary Title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Prof. Raed Arafat

Today, 21st May 2018, Prof. Dr. Raed Arafat was awarded with the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa of Medical University "Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov" - Varna at an official ceremony at First Auditorium of MU - Varna.

The high distinction was awarded to Prof. Arafat by the Rector of MU - Varna Prof. Dr. Krasimir Ivanov for his outstanding contribution to implementing the most modern methods of training of interdisciplinary teams for reaction and action in natural disasters and mass disturbances. Prof. Arafat delivered an academic lecture entitled "Digital exercise and seminar on civil-military cooperation in health disaster response".

 

Prof. Dr. Raed Arafat is one of the most prominent experts in natural disasters, mass damages and counterterrorism not only in Romania but also at the Scientific Department of NATO, EU and WHO. Dr. Raed Arafat's activities are directly related to a number of projects of MU - Varna, including the first anti-terrorism training for intern-doctors in the country, which takes place at Medical University - Varna and aims to train sixth-year students for medical insurance in disasters and crises, involving a large number of injured people.


Prof. Dr. Raed Arafat is a State Secretary of Romania on natural disasters, mass damages and terrorism and Director of the Department for Emergency Situations at the Ministry of Interior of Romania. He is a Coordinator of all emergency medical activities in Romania, including the use of air transport, ambulances, fire brigade, civil defense, specialized hospitals, mountain rescue service, as well as all government projects related to emergencies.

In 1991 Prof. Raed Arafat established a Crisis Emergency Mobile Emergency Service based in Romania, where doctors from emergency hospitals, firefighters, pilots and mountain rescuers collaborate. For his contribution to the Romanian people, he was awarded with the Romanian Order of Merit twice.


Prof. Radoslav Radev extended gratitude to Prof. Arafat, and the Ambassador of the Republic of Romania to Bulgaria HE Mr. Ion Galea congratulated him on the high recognition.


On the eve of 24th May - the Day of the Bulgarian Culture and Slavonic Alphabet, the Rector awarded also the distinction Honorary Blue Ribbon to lecturers of great merit for the 15th consecutive year.
