Ministers Inaugurated a Centre for Interventional Radiology at UMHAT "St. Marina"-Varna

With a religious ceremony for health and well-being, served by His Eminence Metropolitan of Varna and Veliki Preslav Ioan, a Centre for Interventional Radiology was inaugurated at UMHAT "St. Marina"-Varna, which has the last generation angiographic equipment, purchased by MU-Varna. The Minister of Health Mr. Kiril Ananiev, the Minister of Education and Science Mr. Krasimir Valchev and the Mayor of Varna Mr. Ivan Portnih cut the ribbon at the official opening.

"This is a modern laboratory that will save the lives of plenty of people. Moreover, a lot of students will be trained here as well. Having such equipment is a prerequisite for retaining young doctors in the country. Students, coming from 48 countries in the world, are being trained at MU-Varna. We should take pride in what is being done because this is the future," said the Rector of MU-Varna Prof. Krasimir Ivanov. The ceremony was also attended by Prof. Anelia Klisarova, Member of the 44th National Assembly, the District Governor of Varna Stoyan Pasev, the Chairman of the Municipal Council Todor Balabanov, the Executive Director of University Hospital "St. Marina" Prof. Dr. Valentin Ignatov, the academic management of MU-Varna, doctors, students and journalists.

The angiograph equipment is located in a renovated and well-equipped room with an anesthesiology machine at the Varna University Hospital, which allows for multi-team work and performance of hybrid operations. The total investment for the new equipment and repairs exceeds BGN 2 000 000. The state-of-the-art Centre is yet another benefit for the Bulgarian healthcare and education, achieved through the excellent joint activities between MU-Varna and UMHAT "St. Marina", and will be of essential importance both for the treatment of patients from Northeastern Bulgaria and for the modern training of undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students. Not only the entire scope of invasive procedures under imaging control is to be performed here, but also there is an opportunity for a high-speed video link that will allow for both the presentation of the latest methodologies in real time in front of the students, and the presentation of clinical cases and procedures at various scientific medical forums in the country and abroad.

The new angiograph equipment is the only one in the country with a ceiling-suspended C-arm and 55-inch flat-panel display. There is also a system of an ultrasound machine with ultra-modern wireless transducers, delivering the image directly to the working display. This combination provides an excellent opportunity to perform the whole range of interventional procedures in the human body under imaging control. Thanks to the powerful software package, detailed images of blood vessels in all parts of the body can be obtained easily and quickly.

The new angiographic equipment will facilitate the performance of high-quality, wide-ranging vascular and non-vascular interventions for the rapid and efficient therapy of acute ischemic stroke, aortic and cerebral aneurysms, and atherosclerotic changes in the limb vessels. It is also planned the most advanced procedures in the field of oncology, such as trans-arterial chemotherapy and radiofrequency ablation of liver tumours to be performed here.
