A regional workshop dedicated to the topic of the employment of people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Myasthenia Gravis (MG) * was held on 18th July at Varna Municipality. The leading guest – lecturer was Prof. Dr. Ara Kaprelyan, Head of the Neurological Diseases Department at Medical University - Varna and Head of Neurological Clinics Direction at "St. Marina" University Hospital in Varna.
Prof. Kaprelyan informed the participants about the latest developments in the treatment of patients with MS and MG. He reminded the audience the main motto of the American patient organization, "I do not want your pity, I need your support," which he believes embodies in the best way the hopes for successful treatment and active support of the social and economic needs of more than two million MS patients worldwide. Prof. Kaprelyan presented interesting epidemiological and clinic data on the disease, as well as updated information on the contemporary opportunities and prospects for oral administration of the most advanced immunomodulatory medicinal products in the country and abroad. Prof. Kaprelyan pointed out that the main goal of the treatment is to improve the quality of life of patients by delaying the progression of the disease and their disability. He reminded that the initiation of treatment from the first attack has long-term results - delayed progression of disability by 18 months.
The meeting ended with a discussion on the most serious issues related to the current opportunities for treatment of patients with MS and MG provided by the NHIF, securing the right to work and participation of disabled people in European projects and programmes.
The meeting was attended by the President of "MS Society Bulgaria" Foundation Mrs. Tatyana Ivancheva, the President of Varna branch Mr. Lachezar Kudev, members of Varna patient organization, representatives of "Social Activities Healthcare" Directorate - Municipality of Varna, representatives of the Employment Agency, the Labour Inspectorate - Varna and Varna Chamber of Commerce. The organizer of the event was "MS Society Bulgaria" Foundation - Varna as a part of the National Campaign of the Foundation.
