Students from MU-Varna Received an Award from the Student Practical Olympics in Moscow

The team of MU-Varna returned with the Best Debut Team Award from the Student Olympics in practical medical training "Golden MedSkill", held from 22 to 26 March at the biggest Russian Simulation Education Centre at I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University.

The five-member team of MU-Varna, including students in Medicine and Nursing, put to the test their knowledge and abilities to react in emergencies, competing with 51 teams from all Russian medical universities and the medical universities in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and China. The members of the team of MU-Varna were Doychin Nikolov, Aleksey Kerenski, Stoyan Monev, Slav Milushev and Tsvetomira Popova.

The team captain, Stoyan Monev, a fourth year medical student and a former head of a rescue team in the German Emergency Medical System, shared his impressions of the realistic environment. "The first situation when we had to act as a team was a case of a road accident between a car and a motorcycle. The car was on the rails with two injured people in it. Naturally, the motorcyclist was also injured as a result of the collision. At the same time there was a train approaching. We had 5 minutes to carry the victims out of the danger zone and to start cardio-pulmonary reanimation."

Our participants also had to demonstrate their skills individually in situations such as assisting during a surgical procedure and performing reanimation aid in an emergency room. "And quite by chance I ended up all alone at a little Russian airport, where I came upon a man without a pulse. I had to reanimate him and call for help."

Three lecturers accompanied the student team as observers. The head of the Department of General and Operative Surgery Prof. Nikola Kolev was also a member of the jury. Prof. Dr. Viliyan Platikanov, head of the Department of Anesthesiology, Emergency, Intensive and Maritime Medicine and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Branimir Kanazirev from the Department of Propedeutics of Internal Medicine rendered support and guidance to our representatives. They took advantage of the opportunity to get acquainted with the Simulation Centre of the Moscow University, which is one of the biggest and most modern of its kind.

I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University is a longtime partner of MU-Varna. During the summer months the successive bilateral traditional summer student internships are to be implemented at the university hospitals in Moscow and Varna.
