Prof. Dr. Karl Stangl was conferred the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa by Medical University "Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov"-Varna at a solemn ceremony today, 26.05.2016, at Auditorium "Prof. Dr. Vl. Ivanov" at St. Marina University Hospital.
The Rector of MU-Varna Prof. Dr. Krasimir Ivanov conferred the high honour on Prof. Stangl for his exceptional contribution to the implementation and utilization of the most advanced treatment methods in the field of Interventional Cardiology at St. Marina University Hospital and the establishment of the University Hospital and the Medical University as leading medical and training centres in Bulgaria.
Prof. Stangl delivered an academic lecture on: "Catheter-Based Heart Valve Interventions - the New Era in Cardiovascular Medicine" in front of a full auditorium.
Prof. Dr. Karl Stangl is one of the prominent specialists in Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology in Europe and worldwide. He is the head of the Division of Interventional Cardiology and Angiology and Deputy Director of the Department of Cardiology, Angiology and Pulmonology at University Hospital Charité -Berlin.
The impressive professional biography of Prof. Stangl commenced at the University of Munich, where he graduated in Medicine and continued working as an Assistant Professor and Associate Professor. He worked as a specialist in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at University Hospital - Munich, Germany. Since 1992 he has been working at University Hospital Charité - Berlin, and in 2000 he was awarded the academic rank of Professor.
Prof. Stangl has more than 170 publications in leading European and American journals. He himself is a reviewer in 14 specialized journals including - Lancet, Circulation, European Heart Journal, European Journal of Heart Failure, Heart. He has participated in the creation of 13 textbooks of Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology. Moreover, he has registered 11 patents in the field of medical science in Germany and the USA.
Prof. Stangl, together with Dr. Veselin Valkov and a team of St. Marina University Hospital have performed unique bloodless heart valve replacement surgeries on 5 patients in the region of Varna and Northeastern Bulgaria.
