On 20th May 2008 the leaders of the European Commission, European Council and European Parliament signed a joint declaration on the annual celebration of the European Maritime Day. This initiative highlights the essential role of oceans and seas in everyday life not only of coastal communities but also of all EU citizens.
Medical University - Varna has organised a series of initiatives and events dedicated to the holiday for a second consecutive year. In 2016, the events, included in the programme of the organizers of the Faculty of Public Health, have been selected and shown on the website of the European Commission Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (also known in short as DG MARE) as an event of the European Union.
The programme starts on 19th May with a student poster session, which will be set up in the lobby and hallways on the 3rd floor of MU-Varna. Eighteen participants will present their works dedicated to Sea and Health.
The focus of the events is a round table entitled Problems of the Practice in Support of Maritime Medicine Training, which will be held on 20th May, at 14:00, in Room 208 of MU-Varna. The main topics are Preventing Disasters and Terrorism at Sea, Health and Safety in Working at Sea, Climate and Health, and Epidemiology of Communicable Diseases. Among the guest participants will be representatives of the Bulgarian Red Cross, N. Vaptsarov Naval Academy, BAS, RHI, Regional Food Safety Directorate, LUKOIL Neftochim Burgas and others.
Demonstrative scuba diving with a training and practical seminar on Marine Medicine and Maritime Pathophysiology, intended for international and Bulgarian students of MU-Varna, is to be held on the same day. The photographer Orlin Tsanev is going to dive into the Black Sea waters, while a team from the Department of Physiology at MU-Varna will conduct an open lesson, where students will be acquainted with the main requirements for performing scuba diving, the basic physiological indicators of respiration and the cardiovascular systems will be measured before and after diving, and the key rescue elements in emergencies specific to scuba diving will be demonstrated.
A lot of fun and surprises are awaiting the guests at the culinary evening entitled Seafood - a Gift for Health, where students of MU-Varna will present dishes, prepared by them, representing the specific features of seafood around the world. The beginning is at 17:00, at Port - Varna.
