Colorectal cancer is a major health problem. 1 400 000 people in the world get sick every year, which causes approximately 700 000 deaths.
Moreover, there are indications of liver metastases in approximately 19% to 31% of the patients. Over the last decade the widespread use of modern chemotherapeutic and biological agents, combined with laparoscopic surgical techniques, have helped to improve the prognosis of metastatic colorectal cancer.
The better understanding of the biology of the tumor, together with highly efficient diagnostic and therapeutic methods, as well as the distribution of screening programmes will definitely improve the survival of patients in the future.
