Campaign for Bone Density Testing Is Underway at UMHAT “St. Marina“-Varna

The Clinics of Diagnostic Imaging and Endocrinology at UMHAT "St. Marina" are launching a campaign for bone density testing, which goes on till 8th December. Tests with the latest generation osteometer are to be conducted from Monday to Friday, after making an appointment in advance on tel. 052/978 207.

Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder characterized by impaired bone strength and an increased risk of fractures. Bone strength reflects a combination of two main characteristics: quantitative component (bone mineral density) and bone quality. Bone loss is usually asymptomatic until a fracture occurs, that is why osteoporosis is called the "silent killer". Globally, one in three women and one in five men have an osteoporosis fracture in their lifetime. Menopausal women and men over 50-60 years of age are particularly at risk.

The traditional X-ray examination cannot measure bone density, but can detect a fracture. Different technologies have been used to measure bone mineral density, the gold standard being dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The places of the body that can be tested through such DXA osteometry are the lumbar spine (L1-L4) and femoral neck.

UMHAT "St. Marina" has the latest generation osteometer with options for measuring bone density of lumbar spine, hip, the whole body, 10-year fracture risk calculation, adipose tissue evaluation for obese individuals with full body scan, as well as unique bone density software for children. The examination of patients at UMHAT "St. Marina" - Varna also includes consultation with leading experts in the field of osteoporosis (endocrinologists and rheumatologists).
