Get Examined for Oral Cavity Cancer for Free on 4th December

For the third consecutive year students from the Faculty of Dental Medicine at Medical University - Varna organize a Campaign for Fighting Oral Cavity Cancer. The campaign "If in doubt, check it out" is to be held within a week - from 4th to 11th December and is aimed at prevention, early detection and raising Varna citizens' awareness of the disease.

The campaign will start with a free screening, which is to be carried out on 4th December by senior students, with the assistance of their lecturers. Students are going to examine from 12pm till 4pm at St. Marina University Hospital, and from 2pm till 7pm at the Faculty of Dental Medicine. Besides the free screening, student volunteers are going to distribute information leaflets to passersby in various parts of the city. The campaign also includes a lecture module, which will be conducted on 11th December, at the Faculty of Dental Medicine. It is targeted at making people aware of the medical facts related to the disease and giving professional advice for prevention and treatment.

Oral cancer occurs most often in people over 40 years of age. However, there has been a decrease in the age limit recently. Disease symptoms are aphthae and wounds which would not heal for more than 2-3 weeks, and the occurrence of various red or white spots. Risk groups are smokers and people who consume alcohol excessively and are directly exposed to sunlight. "The only people who are capable of providing help in case of the occurrence of such symptoms are general dental practitioners and medical specialists. However, people should not worry when they hear about the Campaign for Fighting Oral Cavity Cancer, as this is a curable disease," comment the organizers of the initiative, "provided it's given due consideration and all the necessary measures are taken."

Every year the campaign is gaining more popularity. At the launch of the campaign in 2012, 60 people took advantage of the free examinations. Last year they doubled to 120, and this year more than 200 people are expected to take advantage of the preventive examinations. The organizers from Dental Medicine Student Association - Varna, the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at MU-Varna and the Clinic of Maxillofacial Surgery at St. Marina University Hospital invite the greatest possible number of people to take part, as the early detection and awareness of the disease are crucial for its successful treatment.
