The University hospital "St. Marina" in Varna will host the meeting of the patients' organization Association of Osteogenesis imperfecta (fragile bones) at 14:30 on 18.03.2014. The event is a part of the overall hospital strategy aimed at providing special care for people with rare diseases.
The possibilities for resolving some of the issues concerning people with "fragile" bones will be discussed during the meeting. Among these problems are the costly drug supplies from abroad. The patients will discuss the issue with the consumables for orthopedic corrections and the telescopic intramedullary nails, in particular. The price is 8000 BGN per nail and usually one or two are necessary. The cost of the nails is not covered by the Health Insurance Fund at the moment.
Osteogenesis imperfecta is a hereditary disease affecting the connective tissue. It is due to a genetic change in the structure of collagen. As a result, the structure and the mechanical endurance of the bones is broken. There are eight types of Osteogenesis imperfecta according to the quality and quantity of the synthesized collagen.
