Unique Ultrasound Scalpel Used for Operations at ENT Clinic at UMHAT “St. Marina” in Varna

The specialists at the Clinic of Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases perform interventions, using an extremely sparing ultrasonic scalpel. It is the only one of this class in our country and one of the first in Europe. The instrument operates on the basis of ultrasound energy and can be used both as a scalpel and a tool that stops bleeding.
“The ultrasound waves targeted at a definite direction induce resonant vibration at the tool tip, which allows for precise incision of different structure tissues. The sound waves, in the range of 20 000-60 000 Hz, affect the proteins through protein denaturation, cutting and stopping the bleeding simultaneously,” explained Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nikolay Sapundzhiev, Head of ENT Clinic at UMHAT “St. Marina” - Varna.

Another advantage of the new ultrasound scalpel is that the equipment allows minimal lateral injury to the tissues and fine bones. The thermal damage to the surrounding tissues is significantly reduced as compared to older equipment. It is also extremely sparing to the patient's healthy tissues and indicates excellent outcomes within the whole range of soft tissue surgery of ENT organs. The state-of-the-art tool has a wide scope of application - from tonsil surgery to tumour resection. The most frequent interventions where it is used are snoring problems in adults and children, distorted lip, sparing interventions on skin tissues of the head and neck area, tongue plastic surgeries in infants, nose surgeries in breathing difficulties, and many other surgical procedures of various degrees of complexity.
