A team of scientists, led by Assoc. Prof. Zlatislav Stoyanov - Head of the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology, reported in a recent publication in the Russian scientific journal "Asymmetry" that 6.5 % of the Bulgarian population is left-handed.
The published data enriches the opportunities of the international research community for cross-cultural analyses. For example, the ratio between left-handed and right-handed people in the Bulgarian population is similar to that in the Southern European and Mediterranean countries but it differs from the Western European countries. The data analysis reveals the validity of some genetic models which try to explain the origin of left-handedness.
