Disciplines:

Medical Chemistry for Dental Medicine specialty

The training course in Chemistry for dental students lasts one semester. For a short period of time it is necessary some of the general chemistry topics to be presented to the new students. The study of the fundamental topics such as protolytic theory and buffer systems, chemical kinetics and equilibrium, etc., develops further the secondary school concepts and contributes to a new stage of understanding them. Тhe emphasis on teaching the Organic Chemistry section is much greater. A crucial step is the introduction of new, unfamiliar organic classes - thiols, ethers, glycerophosphates, nucleic acids, but above all, heterocyclic compounds are the most essential contribution to the new knowledge.

Materials Science for Dental Medicine specialty

The discipline is targeted at acquainting dental students with dental materials used in dental practice. Issues related to the origin, method of production, market presentation, composition and properties of dental materials are considered. Students get acquainted with the characteristics of the main groups of materials - clinical, laboratory and ancillary. Students learn about the purpose, application and processing of gypsum, waxes, impression materials, alloys for dental purposes, plastics, ceramics, cements, amalgams and composites. The prospects for their development are outlined.

The discipline "Dental Materials Science" is studied during the first and second semester and ends with an examination which consists of 3 parts: practical, written and oral. It lays the fundamental basis of the discipline "Prosthetic Dental Medicine", taught from the first to the fifth course of training.

Organic Chemistry for Master of Pharmacy specialty

Organic Chemistry is a very important chemical discipline for the training process of students- pharmacists. It plays an indispensable role in the formation of future professionals, as it provides opportunities for their high advancement. That is why continuous updating of the study programme is required, especially in the need to limit the number of hours of teaching it. The study of this discipline is conducted in two parts, conventionally named as winter and summer semester. During the winter semester (first semester of teaching) the emphasis is put on the classes of organic compounds, thereby building upon the students' knowledge of secondary school. On the other hand, the areas comprising more in-depth specialized training in Organic Chemistry are covered thematically during the summer semester (second semesters).

Inorganic Chemistry for Assistant - Pharmacist specialty

In General Chemistry section some of the essential fundamental topics are introduced in an accessible way. The topics, related to solutions and their properties are clearly developed and emphasized on the basis of the preliminary secondary school knowledge in Chemistry on protolytic theory, ion product of water, hydrolysis of the salts, colloidal solutions properties. The section Chemical Elements Systematics, due to methodological considerations, is larger and contains more details. The teaching material of this section is developed on the basis of the information on structure, properties and application of substances in Medicine and Pharmacy.

Organic Chemistry for Assistant - Pharmacist specialty

Particular attention is paid to Heterocyclic Compounds section since the knowledge which is being acquired by future specialists is focused more profoundly in this direction. Some important organic reactions, e.g. synthesis, polymerization and polycondensation are discussed more thoroughly. On the other hand, the classic organic compounds taught at secondary school are reduced and they are used only as a basis for teaching new agents with applications in Medicine and Pharmacy.

Human Physiology for the specialties Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing Care, Midwifery and the specialties with an educational degree Professional Bachelor from Medical College - Varna.

General and Clinical Pathology for the specialties Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing Care, Midwifery and the specialties with an educational degree Professional Bachelor from Medical College - Varna.

Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies in Medicine – optional discipline

This optional discipline aims at introducing to students one of the latest trends in science in relation to nanomaterials and nanotechnologies and their applications in General and Dental Medicine. The topics which are covered here are related to the origin, development and future prospects of nanomaterials. Students get acquainted with the characteristics of nanostructures, properties of nanomaterials, nanomaterial types and technologies for their production, application areas in General and Dental Medicine, a variety of products, composed of nanomaterials and the risks involved in their production.

The training in "Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies in Medicine" is conducted during the fourth semester. The fundamental basis of the optional course is laid on the topics studied during the first year (1st and 2nd semester) - "Dental Materials Science".

Courses in English for the disciplines Materials Science and Medical Chemistry have been developed and introduced for students from the Faculty of Dental Medicine.
