The predecessor of the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Medicine and Nutrigenomics is the Department of Biochemistry which was established in 1962. Prof. Dr. D. Kalitsin was the first head of the Department. During the years it existed as an independent department and TRS in the Departments of medical chemistry and biochemistry and preclinical, clinical pharmacology, chemistry and biochemistry. Assoc. Prof. T. Yankova was the head of the Department from 1992 to 2007. Since 2007 TRS of biochemistry became an independent Department of biochemistry, molecular medicine and nutrigenomics headed by Prof. Diana Ivanova, PhD.
Currently the Academic Staff of the Department consists of 9 persons (one professor, three senior assistant professors and five assistants), the average age of the academic staff being 34 years.
