Since its establishment in 1961 Medical University - Varna has published teaching aids necessary for the training process. Since the early 1970s it has had its own offset printing facilities. Every next decade brings along with itself new requirements and goals. The need for a change and a different organization of the activities related to the University publishing required a new beginning. Thus the Publishing Department was established on 16th September 2013.
It started with laying a solid foundation in accordance with the existing regulations at the University, in the country and the international standards. After extensive exploration of the matter, the rules for the publishing activities were drawn up, annual planning of the activities was introduced by an annual publishing plan and the ethical standards for publishing in scientific journals were prepared.
The next step is the purchase of a license anti-plagiarism programme, which is used by leading publishers worldwide and allows quick plagiarism check of scientific texts prior to their publication. During these 5 years the publishing house has bought the rights for translating and publishing in Bulgarian language the textbooks Schwartz's Principles of Surgery and Textbook of Clinical Radiology. All these activities prove the intention of MU-Varna to develop serious publishing activities.
Varna Medical University Press has introduced for the first time in our country an online platform for automating the publication processes of the periodicals of MU-Varna . This allows quick and easy submission, editing and review of the publications from anywhere in the world at any time of the day. The online platform also provides free full-text access to the already published issues of all periodicals of the University. The University Press also builds an online conference management system, where all events, organized by the University, are registered and the process of abstract submission is managed, participants are registered, and programmes, abstracts, reports are published.
In response to the requirements of the global leading databases, MU-Varna has begun to publish new, highly specialized journals. Besides Scripta Scientifica Medica, the publishing house provides a complete organization of the activities required for publishing Varna Medical Forum, Scripta Scientifica Medicinae Dentalis, Scripta Scientifica Pharmaceutica, Scripta Scientifica Salutis Publicae and Scripta Scientifica Vox Studentium. It has been working in cooperation with the journals "Bulgarian Ophthalmological Review", "Health Economics and Management", "Heart-Lung", "Hospital Pharmacy Yearbook", "Social Medicine" and "Scientific Works of N. Y. Vaptsarov Naval Academy".
The publishing house of MU-Varna has a digital and offset printing facilities. In 2015 the University purchased Xerox Versant 2100 digital printing press, which can produce a book of 100 pages in 100 copies in just 100 minutes. Varna Medical University Press is the first publishing house in the country, possessing a machine with such characteristic features. A team of editors and specialists in the field of design, pre-press and printing works for the qualitative publication of monographs, academic literature, scientific collections, publications related to the activities of MU-Varna, admission collections, reference books and materials, periodic information publications ("Infocademicа","Student Life"). The University publishing house has three bookshops and an online store, providing deliveries in the country and abroad.
This year for the first time the publishing house of MU-Varna participated in the largest travelling book exhibition in the country "The Book Alley".
