UMHAT “St. Marina”-Varna Has Been Accepted as an Official Member of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation

The Department of Transplantation at UMHAT “St. Marina"-Varna is presently an official member of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (IBMT). The membership of the European network provides development in the field of scientific excellence in stem cell-based therapies, enables participation in specialised working groups, develops professionally not only physicians, but also nurses and non-medical personnel, which leads to enhancing qualification and expertise of employees.

UMHAT “St. Marina"-Varna is the only hospital in Bulgaria where transplants are performed both for children and adult patients. The first autologous transplant was performed in 2014, and the first allogeneic transplant – in 2017.  So far, 203 autologous transplants have been performed, two of them in children and 103 allogeneic, of which five – in children.  Over the course of these 10 years, the scope of transplant activities has steadily been increasing, and these activities were not ceased even during the COVID-19 pandemic. The multidisciplinary medical team has had a number of specialisations in Europe, America and Russia and has been working in close collaboration with experts in this field from Israel, the United States and Europe.

The number of patients searching for a treatment alternative abroad has been constantly decreasing, and those who have been transplanted abroad prefer to be monitored by the physicians at UMHAT “St. Marina"–Varna. This is the result of the multidisciplinary approach to the follow-up of transplanted patients, which boosts the trust between patients and doctors.
