The best sailors in Bulgaria for the past year were awarded at an official ceremony on 31st January at "Yanashki Salon" Sports Hall - Varna.

MU-Varna received a special award for contribution to the development of maritime sport by the President of the Federation of Sailing, Mr. Rosen Marangozov.

The award was received by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Zlatislav Stoyanov, who addressed the audience with the words, "I am happy to receive this award. I am happy that MU-Varna is a worthy member of the Bulgarian sailing family. I am happy that its emblem is on the sails blown by the wind, and is waving on the flags of the Navy. Furthermore, I would like to point out that we are the only University in the country that provides training in Maritime Medicine to its students."

For its overall performance in 2019, the Varna Medical University also received the first prize in IRC-2 class for the entire season in the overall ranking, presented by Mr. Nikola Dukov, President of the IRC Association for Bulgaria.

Angel Dipchikov, the Captain of the University sailing yacht "Hygeia", said, "All regattas we have taken part in are evidence of the sustainable success of our sailing team. We have been progressing with each successive race. The award is a proof of our active involvement in the competitions throughout the season. The next race we are getting ready for is in May - Varna Chanel Cup. We are looking forward to a fruitful season, workouts are underway, and we hope to achieve the best results."

Aleksandar Bachev was awarded with the Grand Prize "Sailor of 2019". For the first time Varna has been the host of the annual sailing awards. The Mayor of Varna Mr. Ivan Portnih and the Regional Governor Mr. Stoyan Pasev were among the guests. The event brought together competitors, coaches, parents, partners and friends of the Bulgarian sailing. The competitors in the children's sailing and in the Olympic classes and keel yachts, who had shown sports excellence at national and international level, received awards.

"I take pride of the fact that the University whose graduate I am has developed itself in sports so tremendously. I am delighted at what you have been doing. I am proud that our University has contributed so much to the development of sailing. We are going to host the European Championship in 2021, and I do believe that with the help of the Federation and MU-Varna everything will be at an even higher level," said Minister Krasen Kralev.
